The Philadelphia Flower Show, the World’s oldest and largest indoor flower show, epitomizes horticultural excellence. Its origins trace back to 1829 when the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) hosted its inaugural exhibition. This event was not only a celebration of gardening and floral craftsmanship but also a forum for exchanging horticultural knowledge among professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Now in its 195th year, the Philadelphia Flower Show, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center (1101 Arch St., Philadelphia), has blossomed into a globally recognized event, attracting visitors and exhibitors from across the globe. Its mission has always been twofold: to delight the senses with exquisite displays of floral and landscape design and to promote gardening and green spaces as essential components of a healthy, sustainable world.

Each year, the show adopts a unique theme, transforming the Pennsylvania Convention Center into a sprawling oasis of beauty and creativity. The theme for 2024 “United by Flowers” emerges as a celebration of community. The theme encapsulates the essence of unity, through a shared passion for gardening, flowers, and plants while drawing visitors into a collective appreciation of nature’s beauty.

The show’s impact extends well beyond its aesthetic appeal. It plays a pivotal role in PHS’s broader mission to advance the health and well-being of the Philadelphia region. Proceeds from the show support a range of community greening initiatives, including tree planting, park maintenance, and urban agriculture projects. Through these efforts, the Philadelphia Flower Show contributes to the creation of greener, more livable communities.

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener, a floral design enthusiast, or simply in search of beauty and inspiration, the Philadelphia Flower Show offers an unparalleled experience that celebrates the magic of the natural world.

Exhibits

This year’s show features an array of new and returning exhibitors, events, and activities, each contributing to the vibrance of this annual floral spectacle. Notable among the highlights is the PHS Entrance Garden, featuring the show’s largest-ever body of water, creating a reflective pool from which floral sculptures will emerge, mirroring the colors of a tropical sunset. Above, aerial floral installations will float like clouds, adding to the immersive experience of entering a different world, one that promises tranquility, beauty, and inspiration.

Taking a novel approach to community engagement, this year’s show includes exhibits inspired by local Philadelphia neighborhoods, showcasing the unique characteristics and cultural heritage of each. Educational exhibitors, including Saul High School and Temple University, will pay tribute to neighborhoods like Roxborough and South Philly’s Pennsport, illustrating the deep connections between the city’s communities and the natural world.

Among this year’s new exhibitors, Kelly D. Norris presents “A Beautiful Disturbance,” which transforms an abandoned lot into a vibrant ecosystem, while Tissarose Floral’s exhibit focuses on joyous gathering spaces. And “Celebrating Bees” an exhibit from the United States Geological Survey Team (USGS), strives to bring a greater understanding of bees and the role they play in our lives and gardens.

Returning exhibitors, include Apiary Studio whose exhibit “Right of Way” salutes highway roadside where shoulders, embankments, and ditches are seen as gardens without a gardener. As such they act as a unifying American experience where plants form a throughway unbound by state lines.

A display by Black Girl Florists, a nationwide collective of female black florists, uses the unifying space of a hair salon as the backdrop for a dynamic mix of bright and nude tones highlighting the individuality and collective strength of black women.

Each participant brings a unique perspective on the theme “United by Flowers.”

Educational Opportunities

Beyond the spectacle of flowers and gardens, the Philadelphia Flower Show serves as an educational platform, offering workshops, lectures, and demonstrations led by experts in various fields of horticulture. These sessions cover a broad spectrum of topics, from garden maintenance and plant care to sustainable landscaping practices.

With a focus on education, community, and sustainability, the 2024 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show invites attendees to explore the many ways in which we are “United by Flowers.” Innovative new educational sessions, “Know to Grow,” cover a range of topics, offering attendees the chance to deepen their gardening knowledge. “Butterflies Live!” and interactive “Potting Parties” connect visitors of all ages and interests with hands-on activities.

Young visitors can engage in planting, reading, and various activities at the Kids Cocoon.  This year saw the introduction of a special Flower Show coloring book, created by local artists.
